Significant parts of New South Wales were heavily impacted by storms and flooding in 2022, with 98 Local Government Areas declaring disaster. The flood events occurring in February to March of 2022 in New South Wales and south-east Queensland have been labelled as the second most economically costly weather event in Australian History.

An independent inquiry into the New South Wales floods of 2022 has resulted in a report with 28 recommendations to improve disaster preparedness.

“Throughout this report, a central theme emerges. Because so much of NSW is prone to natural

disasters, there is a need for a renewed and strengthened emphasis on sustained disaster

preparedness”
